Good stuff, Todd! We do need both of these sisters in our lives…and striking a balance seems to be a good goal. I’m learning to do my Martha work in advance of guests’ arrivals, and then to sit. It’s not perfect, because there is always refilling and replenishing…but ironically, that is exactly what Jesus was calling Martha to do.

Angie, I agree. I find some satisfaction of embracing Martha energy in the hospitality of serving meals to people. But it can be done in a connected way. I prep ahead, and try to do things I know how to do, so I don't get distracted by a new recipe. Plus the modern open layout of kitchen and living room helps keep connection. I think you have discerned the test of our action, are we staying connected to people?

Agreed, Todd. Never thought about the open-concept rooms these days. They do allow for connection and conversation while prepping.

I love this! And I’m also uncomfortably aware that every church runs on Martha energy. Thanks for this.

Oh yes! We will defer to the anxiety of the hard working volunteer, worried that they will stop working so hard, while their anxiety leads us away from a more life-giving mission.
